Kaleidosonic Music Festival Nov. 16

November 16, 2019
7:30 pmto11:30 pm

Finney ChapelOn Saturday, November 16, 2019, I will be participating in the Kaleidosonic Music Festival in Finney Chapel on the Oberlin College campus, as part of a year-long celebration of Oberlin Conservatory’s TIMARA electronic music program. I’ll be contributing a segment of improvised music for solo accordion and electronics, with long complex drones and squawky chaos on top of it!

The Kaleidosonic Music Festival is a FREE event on Saturday, November 16, 2019.  It will start at 7:30 pm in Finney Chapel and run continuously for approximately 4 hours.

The festival will be an exciting evening-length event with musicians representing a wide array of styles: Gospel, classical, rock and roll, jazz, early music, marching band, serious, funny, and avant-garde!

Over 250 musicians will perform in a single extended musical collage: Imagine a brass fanfare alongside taiko drumming, and then organ alongside bagpipes, and over 16 speakers surrounding the audience for a fully immersive sonic experience!

Just a few of the local groups include Oberlin Choristers, Northern Ohio Youth Orchestra (NOYO) musicians, the Oberlin College Black Musicians Guild, the Obertones a capella group, and many faculty, students, and alumni from Oberlin College and Conservatory of Music.

Audience members can come and go as they wish and there will be 3 food trucks from 7-10 pm in the parking lot of Finney Chapel – so you can listen to music, take a break to grab a slice of pizza or a bagel sandwich, and return for more music.

For more detailed information, please visit Kaleidosonic Music Festival or the TIMARA website.  I believe the event will be live-streamed. Look for details in the previous links.

$10 suggestion donation – proceeds to their food pantry program

We will be playing three compositions of mine for accordion ensemble: Vegetative States, Halfway, and my newest work, High Summer: Brood V inspired by the annual emergence of the cicadas. These are all part of what I call my ambient classical project – very meditative and evocative – they should sound fabulous in the lovely live space at St. Peter’s. In addition the group will be playing music by Bach, Philip Glass, Arvo Pärt, and other contemporary composers.

I’ll be performing with my colleagues Robert Duncan, Mayumi Miyaoka, Denise Koncelik and Jeanne Velonis in our first formal indoor concert. (We’ve played out in the parks a great deal during the past two summers.)

It should be a fun and unique sounding concert in a great space and will last about an hour. Children welcome.

July 18, Havana

July 18, 2015
7:00 pmto9:00 pm

I’ve just confirmed that internationally acclaimed Camerata Romeu will be premiering the string orchestra version of my piece, Dance Dance Dance, in Havana Cuba on Saturday, July 18! They are the first all women’s string orchestra in Latin America and fabulous group of musicians. I’m very excited and honored to have them playing my music! If anyone happens to be in Havana that night, plan on coming to the concert at the Basilica in Habana Vieja at the corner of Oficios and Amargura streets. It should be a great show! (Not sure of the exact time. When I find out, I’ll post it here.)

Projects 2015

Things are starting to ramp up for a number of different projects. Upcoming activites include:

  • July 18, evening – World premiere of my string orchestra composition, Dance Dance Dance by the Camerata Romeu in Havana, Cuba!!!
  • July 22, 6-8pm – I’ll be playing solo accordion in Bryant Park as part of their Accordions Around The World festival. My friends in the Bachtopus Accordion Quartet may drop by to play a few tunes with me as well.
  • August 7-8 – I’ll be playing accordion on the annual American Accordionist Association workshops and concerts with Bill Schimmel at the Tenri Cultural Institute on W. 13th Street in NYC.  In addition to playing some Bach with Bill, I’ll be performing a Scott Joplin rag and the world premiere of the all-accordion version of my piece, Halfway.
  • A new group, yet to be named, featuring a lot of new music I’ve been writing, inspired by my recent study of Afro-Cuban rhythms. It will include accordion, percussion, flute, cello, and like bass as a core with perhaps others added later. We’ll be doing preliminary read-throughs of the material this summer and planning to starting to play out in the fall of 2015
  • Performances with the Bachtopus Accordion Quartet. We’re a group of four NYC accordionists playing both classical and contemporary repertoire. We’ll be playing in Bryant Park in July with dates and other details to be announced.
  • I’ll be recording and releasing some of my accordion music, including The Waning Moments of Raphus Cucullatus for accordion and guitar, and Halfway for four accordions. Links here when they’re ready.
  • My piece for piano and electronics, Electrosonata:Spontaneous Combustion, performed by incomperable Thomas Rosenkranz, has just been released on the Oberlin Music record label. It’s a magnificent recording in both stereo and BluRay surround sound, and includes music by a number of really great Oberlin Conservatory alumni composers. You can find it on Naxos Direct here or on Amazon here.
